Log Skyscraper - Skyscraper Trading Post

Fireweed & Petunnias in Bloom The Skyscraper Trading Post is named for the historic four-storey log building located in downtown Whitehorse, Yukon. The trading post itself is located on the bottom floor of the two-storey log structure that sits directly in front of the Skyscraper. Both buildings were built by Yukon pioneer, Martin Berrigan in the 1940's. With the Alaska Highway construction and the presence of the armed services in the Yukon, rental accommodation was scarce. Martin wanted to retire and the rental of the buildings was his retirement income.

Totem Carver Unfortunately Martin did not live long enough to reap much of the benefits of his labors as he died shortly after he finished building them. Since then, the property has gone through no less than 12 owners.

In January 2000 by order of council, they were officially designated as a Municipal Historic Site. The structures are one of the most photographed in the Yukon Territory.

The Trading Post offers the shopper anything from a full-size lynx fur to a genuine Klondike gold nugget or rhinestone tiara. It is operated by the husband and wife team of Gus Karpes and Irene Pugh - commonly known as Karpes and Pugh. Both are Yukon pioneers and have lived in the territory for most of their lives.
